Ramses II essays

Ramses II essays While visiting the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, I found numerous works of art that interested me. I was able to appreciate these works more than before because of the knowledge I now possess after having taken this class thus far. Understanding the background, time periods, and history of the works that I was practically analyzing at the museum, made the pieces even more interesting and valuable to behold. The piece of work that captured my eyes the most was the statue of Ramesses II (?). This statue was found at the Heracleopolis, Temple of Harsaphes, in Egypt. This sculpture was made somewhere between 1897 and 1834, during Egypts Middle Kingdom. The artist was probably an ancient Egyptian who was patroned by the Pharaoh Ramesses II himself. According to the museums description of the work, Ramesses II seized this sculpture from a former ruler and the head was replaced to fit Ramesses satisfaction. This is a historical piece to preserve his power and immortality. This statue is an example of freestanding sculpture or sculpture in the round. It has been carved and chiseled out of Quartzite stone. This particular stone is composed mainly or entirely of quartz. The stone is compact and is a form of metamorphosed sandstone in which silica, or quartz, has been deposited between the grains of quartz of which the sandstone is essentially composed. Quartzite has a smooth fracture and is found primarily among ancient rocks. The subject and iconography of the work is to emphasize the success, reign and power of Ramesses II. According to the museums description, the sculpture also functioned as a place for the non-priests of the community to place votive offerings for the gods of the temple. If you’re a junior thinking of taking the SAT before senior year, the June SAT can give you a chance to raise your scores and get a head start on the college application process. In this article, we'll tell you everything you need to know about the June SAT, including when it is, when its registration deadlines are, and when scores are expected to come out. We’ll also give you a detailed list of the pros and cons of the June SAT to help you decide whether this test date is ultimately right for you. When Is the June SAT? Here is the schedule for the upcoming June SAT, with all of the critical dates you should know: Test Date Registration Deadline Late Registration Deadline Waitlist Deadline Deadline for Changes June 6, 2020 May 8, 2020 May 19, 2020 (by mail) or May 27, 2020 (online or by phone) June 1, 2020 May 27, 2020 Source: The College Board The June SAT is only available to those taking the exam in the U.S. For international test takers, the regular SAT will not be administered in June; however, SAT subject tests will be administered. To register for the June SAT, you must pay an SAT registration fee of either $64.50 (with the optional Essay) or $49.50 (without the Essay). The June SAT registration deadline is Friday, May 8, or about a month before the test. If you miss the June SAT registration deadline, you may still register for the exam as long as you do so by the late registration deadline, which is Wednesday, May 27. Late registration requires a late fee of $30 (in addition to the general registration fee). When your colleges actually receive and process your June SAT scores, however, ultimately depends on how quickly the College Board sends scores and how your colleges choose to process these scores. Some schools may not process SAT scores until a week after receiving them, so always gives your colleges ample time to process your SAT scores well before college application deadlines. Luckily, June SAT scores should face few, if any, difficulties getting to your colleges on time. Normally, we recommend taking the SAT no later than five weeks before your application deadlines (and no later than seven weeks before your deadlines if you think you'll need to order additional score reports). So for the June SAT, the earliest deadline you could theoretically work with would be around July 8. Your June SAT scores are essentially guaranteed to arrive well before your college applications are due, no matter where you apply or which decision plan you elect to do. Phew! Pros and Cons of Taking the June SAT Still deciding whether to take the June SAT? Here are some of the major pros and cons of the end-of-school-year testing session. ' Pros of Taking the June SAT June SAT scores will for sure arrive on time for regular decision and early action plans. Many students take the SAT at the beginning of senior year in a last-ditch effort to improve their SAT scores, but the October, November, and December test dates can't always guarantee your scores will arrive at your schools on time, especially if you’re applying early action. Because June SAT scores are sent out around mid-July, you can rest assured your schools will have plenty of time to process your scores. It allows you to get the SAT out of the way before starting your college applications. If you take the June SAT as a junior and do well on it, you won’t have to take it again your senior year- and therefore won’t have to deal with the stress of juggling both college apps and studying for an exam. It gives you more time and flexibility than other test dates. With the June SAT, you won't have to study during your (likely stressful) senior year; you'll also have the entire summer to study should you decide to retake the SAT in August or October. So compared to other test dates (namely those in August, October, November, and December), the June SAT offers far more flexibility, giving you a better chance of securing a high SAT score. Cons of Taking the June SAT You’ll have to study for the SAT during finals and AP exams. Unfortunately, end-of-year tests are numerous- and squeezing in an SAT on top of this might end up burning you out. If you’re someone who gets easily overwhelmed or finds it challenging to study for multiple tests at once, opt for an earlier SAT test date in May or a later one in August or October. It may conflict with your SAT subject tests. Those who need to take SAT subject tests should do so in June, as you'll have just finished your AP courses and everything you learned will be fresh in your mind. Because you can't take both subject tests and the regular SAT on the same day, this means it'll be better for you to move the regular SAT to a different date. On a related note, if your SAT subject tests are only offered on the June date (i.e., you’re taking the German, Modern Hebrew, Latin, and/or Italian subject tests), you’ll have to take them in June no matter what! June SAT Recap This year's June SAT is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2020. The registration deadline is May 8, and the late registration deadline, as well as the deadline for changes, is May 27 (May 19 if registering by mail). The Marines are a branch of the military, which means they are obviously similar to the Navy, Army and Airforce. They are the first to enter a warzone and are highly trained to make sure they know exactly what to do if that situation arises. Operating â€Å"far from the flagpole†, without the direct supervision of senior leadership but under the unforgiving scrutiny of the media, our young Marines must be integrated with the quality of character necessary to permit effective, independent decision making under extreme stress. † This quote directly relates to the idea of the Marines because they are usually in small groups with minimum leadership and sent into unfamiliar places, in which they must assess the situation in front of them and act accordingly. Although all branches of our military are equally important in my eyes, each has their own views of importance inside our military. Marines are viewed as an elite group of individuals from the top chain of command to the grunts in the field. The Marines run as any other company, they are recruited and trained and sent off to do their respective job s. They are compensated for their service and can choose to go career and spend their entire lives in the military. I believe their espoused values do align with their enacted values because they are said to be courageous and brave, and that is what we hear about and see when they are portrayed in the media. There are many factors, such as secret missions, that may be going on as we speak that we may never know about that could question the way we interpret their values but as an American I believe the missions they carry out are in our best interest.

An Analysis of Spivak’s Translation of Mahasweta Devi’s Essay

Mahasweta Devi is a very well known figure in modern contemporary Bengali Literature and also a Ramon Magsaysay Award winner for her tremendous works in the field of literature mainly on tribals and marginalized people. Gayatri Spivak played a great role in making Mahasweta Devi known to the literature world through her translations and her work of subaltern studies on Devi’s texts. Spivak has translated many texts of Mahasweta Devi from Bengali into English. Translation has its own problems and issues and has been discussed at large and these issues and problems are matter of concern for every translator. The present paper is concerned with the problems which emerged after reading the select translated text â€Å"Draupadi† and what English/Western readers are deprived of while reading the translated text. Mahasweta Devi (1926- ) is a prolific Bengali writer and a very active social activist. Her works for the upliftment of the tribal people is extra ordinary. Along with the tribal people, she has also dedicated her struggles for all the subalterns, who are the victims of the system and class. Her works like Bashai Tudu, Chhota Munda and His Arrow, Rudali, Mother of 1084, â€Å"Douloti†, â€Å"Draupadi†, â€Å"Breast-giver†, etc. gives a realistic picture of the society where protagonists are oppressed and suppressed by the different tools of the system. Major portions of her writings are journalistic in nature and are directed against the mainstream. According to her mainstream people are the mute spectators and are very much part of the exploitations inflicted upon the subalterns. Though all her stories are written in Bengali, most of the works of Devi has been now translated into English and other languages for wider readership. To conclude we can say that whatever measures a translator may take but there will be always loss of information. The best a translator can do is to minimize the loss. Progress in westward expansion (for white Americans) not good for native Americans. The early United States history is a story of progress and conflict in terms of political, territorial, and social advancement. Political: Alien and Sedition Acts- During the Adams administration, congress passed the Alien and Sedation acts to suppress public criticism of the government and limit the freedom of foreigners in the US. Outcry against these acts helped the republican cause. then the rise of democratic politics – between 1820 and 1840, a revolution took place in American Politics. When property and taxpaying qualifications for voting were repealed, voter participation grew drastically. In turn, the expanded electorate made possible the creation of new national political parties. 2nd party system – increased political participation, economic concerns stemming from the panic of 1819m anxiety over slavery’s expansion, and the ‘corrupt bargain† all contributed to the creation of the second party system. As a result, the modern political system we know today was born. Election of 1828 – Jackson Democrats were the first to appeal directly for voter support through a professional party organization And, in the end, Jackson’s victory in 1828 was interpreted as a victory for the common man over the rich and well born. with democrats and whigs- Democrats were the Jackson party. They were against interference from the national government and had a powerful base in rural south and west among urban workers in the north. Whigs formed in opposition to Jackson and favored a strong national government and social reform. They had a powerful base in the industrialized North as well as among some southern planters. which fell apart over issue of slavery expansion- Wilmot’s Provision – Proposing that slavery should be banned from all of the territories acquired from Mexico, this provision ignited an intense debate about the place of slavery in the future of the nation and helped trigger the end of the Second Party System. Territorial: Louisiana purchase- Doubled the size of the US, which terrified many federalists who feared that the creation of new western states would further eaken the political influence of the northeast. Tecumsen and Tenskwatawa – Calling for a return to traditional Native American practices, these brothers created a powerful pan-indian military movement and eventually allied with the British in order to stop Anglo-American expansion War of 1812 – The war of 1812 effectively destroyed the ability of the Native Americans to resist American Expansion east of the Mississippi and it convinced Americans that they could now fend off European threats. Missouri compromise – The Mississippi compromise, which represents the nation’s first extended debate over slavery’s expansion, preserved sectional balance and prohibited the formation of slave states north of the Mississippi compromise line. Indian removal act – Passed in 1830, this act forced Native Americans to leave their tribal lands and settle on federal lands to the west of the Mississippi River. manifest destiny. – â€Å"Manifest Destiny†, the commonly-held belief that God had chosen Anglo-Americans to expand westward, was in reality a racial, economic, and political justification for aggressive territorial expansion. But with the US War with Mexico came great debate over whether slavery should continue to exist expanding. – This war bitterly divided American public opinion, greatly expanded the nations borders, initiated a legacy of conquest throughout the southwest, and set the stage for civil war. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo – According to this treaty, Mexico surrendered its northern provinces of California and New Mexico to the US and accepted the Rio Grande as the boundary of Texas in return for $15 million. Social:  Slavery was a large part of American society as a result of king cotton. – Demand for cotton was a result of the industrialized revolution. And, by the civil war, cotton accounted for almost 60% of American exports. Pro-slavery Arguments – In their defense of slavery, Southerners argued that the institution was essential for the nations economy, that it was sanctioned by the bible, that blacks were racially inferior and better off enslaved, and that slaves received excellent care and protection compared to factory workers in the north. Slave Resistance – Wielding power within a system designed to render them powerless, slaves resisted the institution of slavery in a variety of ways. Nat Turner’s Rebellion – Nat Turner’s slave rebellion resulted in the deaths of 55 white people and instilled intense fear among slave owners for years to come. Abolition Movement – Abolitionists argued that slavery was immoral, illegal, NS violation of the principles of natural rights of life and liberty embodied in the Declaration of Independence. Compromise of 1850 – Which adopted the doctrine of popular sovereignty in the west and enacted a controversial fugitive slave law, only temporarily settled the question of slavery in the territories. Kansas-Nebraska Act – As a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, antislavery Northerners and proslavery Southerners clashed in Kansas and popular sovereignty quickly degenerated into warfare. Election of 1860 – The election of 1860 was perhaps the most divisive in American history, And, as a result of Lincoln’s election, southern states began withdrawing from the union. Only through the Civil War that slavery eventually abolished –Though the Civil War started as an effort to maintain the union, it evolved into a war for the liberation of slaves. Indeed, slavery, as a political, economic and moral issue, was the root cause of the war. Emancipation Proclamation – Free only those slaves living in states not under the union control. Nevertheless, the proclamation allowed black soldiers to fight for the union and transformed union forced into an arm of liberation. with the 13th Amendment – Realizing that the Emancipation Proclamation could be reverses by future legislation, Lincoln won congressional approval of the 13th Amendment, which finally abolished slaver in the United States.

1. A manager’s job can be described from various perspectives. (Functions, roles, essential skills, systems, contingencies). describe what managers do using Henri Fayol’s functions approach and the contingency/situational approach. Bring out in you presentation, the advantages and disadvantages of the approach. Successful organizations are led by experienced and knowledgeable managers. Good managers are there to make work load look less difficult and their responsibility is mounting and endless. Managers oversee the use of all resources; that is to say financial, physical, information and human resources in their respective firm. All the aspects of a manager’s job are interrelated. Managers also develop, maintain and implement the organization’s goals and objectives. They also lead their employees as well as motivating them to meet set targets. What managers do is represented by the term POLC. This means; planning, organizing, leading (commanding), and controlling. According to Henri Fayol, there are fourteen management principles. However not all of them apply to manager’s roles, essentials, system, functions or contingencies. Planning is a predetermined course of action in order to set up clear business objectives and making of decisions on the best use of resources. Mangers here decide on the tasks and resources that are needed to achieve business objectives. It is the most difficult among the four and therefore requires active participation of the whole organization. This then comes out as a manager’s role that is he/ she is responsible for coordinating this setup. According to Fayol, planning must be coordinated on different levels and with different horizons. Since this process involves defining goals and establishing strategies for achieving those goals and developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities, the manager is responsible for such. Planning as presented by Fayol facilitates management objectives that are it highlights the purpose for which various activities are to be undertaken. It also helps  in focusing the attention of employees on the objectives or goals of the business. However on the other hand, planning is rigid that is it has a tendency to make administration inflexible. There also is high doubt in the development of employees because of which management might have faced lot of difficulties in future. Planning therefore introduces inelasticity and discourages individual initiative as well as experimentation. Planning minimizes uncertainties that are it reduces uncertainty of the future as it involves anticipation of future events. Planning also facilitates coordination. Planning improves employee’s moral Employees know in advance what is expected of them and therefore conformity can be achieved easily. This encourages employees to show their best and also earn reward for the same. Planning encourages innovations. In the process of planning, managers have the opportunities of suggesting ways and means of improving performance. However planning is time consuming and expensive. Planning is a time consuming process because it involves collection of information, its analysis and interpretation thereof. The entire process of planning takes a lot of time specially where there are a number of alternatives available. Collection, analysis and evaluation of different information, facts and alternatives involve a lot of expense in terms of time, effort and money. Organizing according to Fayol’s perspective, is when managers provide capital, personnel and raw materials for the day to day running of the business and building structure to match the work. However, Luther Gulick and Brit Lydnall Urwick expanded organizing as establishing a structure of authority for all work. This is an essential role played by a manager. Managers arrange work to accomplish the organization’s goals. Managers also are concerned with assigning and allocation of resources and duties to employees. This is quite essential since the process brings people together that is as employees are grouped they get time to actually discuss therefore covering the social need as indicated by Abraham Maslow. It is also a manager’s job in organizing that is it is entirely up to him to know how tasks are to be grouped, who is to do the tasks, what tasks are to be done and who is to report to whom. Organizing helps in the division of work that then aids in the bringing up of specialization in various activities of concern. Specialization helps reduce wastages and in turn increases the quality of products produced. This is because everyone will be obliged to a  duty and the employees in a bid to get some recognition at work, they tend to work hard. Organizing also helps enhance effective administration, coordination, scope for new changes, and classifies authority. This is to say that organizing helps to define job positions, creates clear cut relationships among positions and ensure mutual cooperation among individuals, classifies power to every manager and the way he/ she has to exercise those powers can be clarified so that misuse of power will not take place respectively. However, specialization leads to boredom that is if the person continues to work in the same department for a long time. Leading is optimizing return from all employees in the interest of the entire enterprise. Successful managers have personal integrity, communicate clearly and base their judgments on regular audits. Leading is the imparting of a vision to the organization in order to achieve a goal. It does this by formulating a well-thought out vision and then clearly communicating it. It involves managers giving orders to employees. Managers here analyze workers’ reports and in turn get to know more about an employee. This thorough knowledge of personnel creates unity, energy, innovation, loyalty and eliminates incompetence. Managers here also motivate subordinates, influence individuals or teams as they work. This comes to the point in which a manager is said to work with and through people to accomplish organizational goals. It is within a manager’s job as well to choose the most effective communication channels or to deal with any employee behavior. Leading maintains order in the sense that everyone will be under one superior hence there are chances of having an organized structure. Members know to whom they report and who reports to them. This means that communication gets channeled along defined and predictable paths, which allows those higher in the organization to direct questions to the appropriate parties. It also means that individuals tend to know who does and does not possess the authority to assign or change tasks. A clear chain of command also generates clearly defined sets of responsibilities. However, Organizational structures that have leading as a management’s role are highly at an advantage because it offers very clear, if not always easy, advancement paths. In business organizations, for example, advancement frequently means replacing a departing or advancing superior. Also a leading management role  divides these areas of concern into various department configurations that specialize. Specialization allows organizations to concentrate particular skill sets and resources to achieve maximum efficiency. However In theory, organizations pursue a goal or goals as a unified team. The departmentalizing of specializations leads, in some cases, to decisions made to benefit a department rather than the organization goals. Amongst the POLC, controlling is the last element. Mangers here identify weaknesses and errors by controlling feedback and conforming activities to plans, policies and instructions. The manager under controlling; monitors actual performance, compares actual to standard performance and takes action basing on the outcome. It is entirely a manager’s job to come up with plans, policies and instructions that can govern the business and in turn benefit the business as a whole. By allowing controlling functions to operate effectively and efficiently through coordination and control methods for Fayol, the manager is the one who overlooks an employee as a living organism that requires liaison officers and joint committees. Her first impression of the house almost tells you that the narrator knows of the upcoming transformation that will take place in the house while she is there. The location of the house, 3 miles from the nearest village, its slight state of disrepair symbolizes the narrator’s mental condition as being that of isolation and segregation.
